Common perennial herb widely distributed in the southern and eastern United States having drooping clusters of pinkish flowers and thick basal leaves suggesting a lion's foot in shape; sometimes placed in genus Prenanthes. Synonyms: gall of the earth, Nabalus serpentarius, Prenanthes serpentaria.
