One of two thick muscles running from the sternum and clavicle to the mastoid and occipital bone; turns head obliquely to the opposite side; when acting together they flex the neck and extend the head. Synonyms: musculus sternocleidomastoideus, sternocleido mastoideus, sternocleidomastoid muscle.
